Digital Smile Design What is Smile Design?

What is smile design?

Smile design refers to the personalized adaptation of the elements of teeth, lips, and gums that play a role in a person's smile. When designing a smile, important parameters include the patient's gender, facial structure, expressions, and character. Smile design is also known worldwide as "Hollywood smile."

What treatments/procedures does Smile Design include?

Aesthetic smile design involves dental treatments to change the shape, surface structure, and color of teeth. It includes procedures such as veneers like porcelain laminates, full ceramic porcelain, as well as laser teeth whitening treatments. It also encompasses procedures for gum aesthetics, such as gum levelings, to achieve an overall pleasing appearance. While sometimes one of these treatments may suffice, in some cases, a combination of these procedures is necessary.

How is Smile Design done?
Smile designs are done digitally.

How many sessions does digital smile design take?

Digital smile design usually takes about 2 sessions. In the first session, your records are taken, and in the second session, a "Mock Up" is created to show you the digital design inside your mouth. Treatment is initiated based on the design, and subsequent sessions vary depending on the condition of your teeth and the procedures required, but typically, achieving results may take around 3 sessions.

What to expect in the first appointment for digital smile design?
During the initial session for digital smile design, photos and videos are taken using studio equipment. Measurements are also taken from both your upper and lower jaws for designing purposes.

How long does it take to prepare the digital smile design?
The digital smile design is prepared within 3 to 5 days. The data recorded during the first appointment is evaluated digitally by the dentist, and the envisioned smile is designed. Facial features such as eye, ear, nose, chin tip, etc., are considered while determining tooth shapes, ensuring a dynamic harmony with the individual's style following the concept of visagism.

What happens during the trial session?
A silicone mold (mock-up) obtained from the digital design model is placed on your teeth during the trial session. Under the guidance of the dentist, this design can be examined in front of a mirror or recorded on camera. Subsequently, the silicone mold (mock-up) material is removed from the mouth.

What are the situations where a trial cannot be conducted?
In cases where one or more teeth are significantly protruded or out of their ideal position, conducting a trial without adjusting the position of the tooth may not be accurate. Therefore, such teeth may hinder a 100% accurate trial of the ideal design. However, this is considered during the decision-making stage by the dentist and the patient.

What happens when I accept the digital smile design?
The dentist explains in detail what procedures need to be done to the existing teeth to achieve the ideal smile design and discusses any alternatives. Digital smile design is usually achieved through Orthodontics, Dental Implant, and Gum Treatment applications, either individually or in combination.

Upon accepting the proposed treatment plan, the dentist initiates the treatment, documenting the existing condition and planning everything according to the digital design.

Can I make changes to the digital smile design?
The main purpose of the trial session is for the individual to approve and accept the smile design, express any points of disagreement, and have those points corrected as desired. While minor changes can be made within the same session (such as increasing/decreasing the length of a single tooth), larger changes may require a new appointment.

Will the smile created in the digital design be replicated exactly when the treatment is complete?
The material used in the trial session is not durable and visually sufficient for a long period. However, during the treatment process, the prepared teeth are made using durable materials and special methods under laboratory conditions to replicate the smile shown in the digital design.
